Lake Tahoe’s notorious traffic could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to an innovative transportation solution: America’s first electric flying ferry. The vessel, envisioned by Fly Tahoe CEO Ryan Meinzer, would reduce travel time across the lake from 1.5 hours to just 30 minutes.
The ferry uses hydrofoils—underwater wings that function like airplane wings—allowing the vessel to glide above the water and waves. This technology makes the ferry 10 times more energy-efficient, enabling all-electric, battery-powered operation.
The service could run five round trips daily, easing congestion while offering a sustainable travel option. Meinzer also sees the ferry helping make Tahoe living more practical by connecting communities on opposite shores.
Meinzer is collaborating with local and federal officials to launch the project, aiming for service to begin by late 2025 or early 2026. The expected fare is about $50 each way—a price he believes is justified by the environmental and lifestyle benefits.
With the world’s only similar ferry operating in Stockholm, Sweden, this project could place Lake Tahoe at the forefront of sustainable, tech-driven transportation.
