Give Your Christmas Tree a Green Afterlife

Now that the holiday season has wrapped up, it’s time to think about what to do with your Christmas tree. Instead of tossing it into the trash, consider participating in our local program that recycles Christmas trees into wood chips.

The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District has partnered with IVGID and Waste Management in a program where you can recycle your beloved Christmas tree and have them turned into wood chips … for free!

You just need to take your tree to 958 Lakeshore Blvd, Overflow Parking, across from Incline Beach before Jan. 29, 2024.

Recycling Christmas trees has several benefits for our community:

1. Helpful for the Environment: Recycling your Christmas tree is a simple yet impactful way to contribute to a healthier environment. By diverting trees from landfills, you help reduce the burden on waste management systems and promote a greener, more sustainable future.

2. Beneficial for Using as Mulch: The transformation of Christmas trees into wood chips results in nutrient-rich mulch. This mulch can be used to enhance soil moisture retention, suppress weed growth, and improve overall soil health in gardens and landscaping.

3. Use at Hiking Trails: Local parks and hiking trails can benefit from recycled Christmas trees as well. Wood chips derived from these trees provide a natural and eco-friendly trail covering, making paths more accessible while minimizing environmental impact.

4. Effective for Soil Erosion Barriers: Wood chips from recycled Christmas trees serve as excellent erosion barriers. Placing them strategically can help prevent soil erosion, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall or wind.

By participating in Incline Village/Crystal Bay’s Christmas tree recycling program, you not only give your tree a meaningful afterlife, but also contribute to a more sustainable and eco-conscious community.

Shout out to our local agencies for providing this great service!
