The team at 2News Nevada has confirmed the multi-year initiative to remove hazardous lead-covered telecommunications cables from the bottom of Lake Tahoe has officially concluded, marking a significant environmental victory for the region. (Article)
The League to Save Lake Tahoe, an environmental watchdog and key partner in the effort, announced the completion on Thursday.
The complex removal project was led by AT&T’s specialty marine services contractor, J.F. Brennan Company, with the assistance of divers, biologists, and archaeologists. The team worked carefully to extract the cables without disrupting water quality, aquatic ecosystems, or Tahoe’s pristine natural environment.
The recovered cables are now being transported out of the Tahoe Basin for recycling.
The issue first came to light thanks to the environmental non-profit Below the Blue, which collaborated with the League to map the location and extent of the cables across the lakebed.
This achievement underscores the importance of partnerships in protecting Lake Tahoe’s unique ecosystem and serves as a reminder of the ongoing work required to preserve its beauty for future generations.
