Today is Nevada’s 159th birthday! Our state became the 36th to join the Union on October 31, 1864, during the Civil War. To commemorate this day, the last Friday in October is observed as a statewide holiday in the Silver State, providing the perfect opportunity to celebrate all that Nevada has to offer.
We have rounded up some the key events for you to enjoy with friends and family this weekend, and there is a lot more happening throughout the weekend that can be found here.
Friday and Saturday, 9am – 4:30pm: Visit the Nevada State Railroad Museum. This is a great cultural resource dedicated to educating visitors and the community about Nevada railroad history. Free admission this Friday and Saturday. The museum 2180 South Carson Street.
Friday, 5:30pm: Spirits & Spirits – Presentation by Janice Oberding on Folklore and Ghosts at the Railroad Musem. This lively presentation covers the importance of the railroad to the Silver State’s history and in the State’s folklore and ghosts. Tickets are required.
Friday, 7pm: Masquerade Ball. Don your masquerade mask and Victorian formal wear and head to Historic Piper’s Opera House. Tickets are required.
Saturday, 7-9:30am: Pancake Breakfast at the Governor’s Mansion located at 606 N. Mountain Street. This is hosted by the Carson City Republican Women’s Club. Cost is $7 for Adults and $4 for Kids 10 and younger.
Saturday, 8am: 35th Annual Nevada Day Classic. This is a classic road course through the streets of west Carson City. Costumes are HIGHLY encouraged! This year’s theme is Home Means Nevada so be creative and be part of the fun! Email tahoemtnmilers@gmail.com for more info.
Saturday, 8am: Remax Balloon Launch (takes place on South Carson Street). You can get some great shots of the 20+ balloons if you head up one of the hills on the west side of Carson City. This is a free event.
Saturday, 10am: Nevada Day Parade. Carson Street comes alive in celebration of our statehood! Marching bands, equestrian groups, floats of all kinds, and much more will be traveling south from William Street to Stewart Street. This is a free event and you can check out the parade line up here.
Saturday, after the parade. The Humane Society is holding an Adoption Event! As soon as our pups, staff, and volunteers are done parading, we’ll have adoptions at our adoption van in the Carson Mall parking lot. You can find us in front of Sportsmans at 1443 S Carson Street.
