Exciting changes are in store for the 2025 edition of Reno’s iconic Hot August Nights event. After years of calling the Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) home, the event will return to the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) this August. This marks the first time since 1986 that the university will host the car show, bringing the event full circle to its original stomping grounds.
Executive Director Denny Dotson reflected on the event’s origins, saying, “In 1986, it was called ‘Hamburger Haven’—our first-ever show and shine. Who knew 38 years later we’d be back here to kick off the event again?”
UNR President Brian Sandoval shared his enthusiasm: “The university and northern Nevada are deeply connected. This is a natural fit, and we’re thrilled to welcome Hot August Nights back.” Sandoval noted that this change has been in the works for months, spurred in part by ongoing expansion construction at GSR. UNR was the obvious choice, offering more space and better logistical options for the event.
Lawlor Events Center will handle event registration, while the north parking lots will transform into a hub of activity. Dotson explained, “We’re focusing on a tailgate setup with a full stage, sponsors, food, and beverage—just like we had at GSR but with even more room to enhance the experience.” UNR’s ample parking structures are expected to make the event more accessible for both participants and visitors.
The move to UNR offers more than just convenience—it could bring a fresh boost to the region’s economy. “By adding a new venue, we’ll give 6,000 participants more room to spread out and alleviate congestion,” Dotson said.
Although the main venue has shifted, Hot August Nights will still include Virginia City as a key location, with opening weekend offering expanded access to other venues.
