The Golf Advisory Committee met on Thursday to discuss the goals and objectives of the Golf Advisory Committee, recruitment progress of the Director of Golf, and provide recommendations for Service Levels and Operations at both District Golf Courses. You can find the agenda here.

The full meeting is available online, and we have tried to summarize some of the key discussions below:

GENERAL BUSINESS

1. The main goals and objectives of the Golf Advisory Committee are to review finance data, utilization data, and member data (demographics of people using the golf courses) with an objective of providing service level recommendations, as well as operational and pricing recommendations to ensure the golf courses are well run and a valuable asset to the Incline Village / Crystal Bay community.

They are to make recommendations, not set policy.

2. Interviews are actively taking place to fill the role of the Director of Golf. Interim Director of Finance Bobby Magee, Interim General Manager Mike Bandelin, Committee Member Jay Simon, and Trustee Sara Schmitz joined Director of Human Resources Erin Feore in those interviews and speaking with potential candidates. More interviews are expected to take place next week.

  • Feore mentioned an effort to manage the expectations around this role. She is reviewing other defined positions where the business is more expansive than just a course and a shop to ensure the job description is as accurate, and comprehensive as possible.
  • One of the biggest concerns from candidates and other experts in the field, is the current role requires the Director of Golf to oversee food and beverage at the Chateau. The general feeling is this should be broken out into two roles.
  • Feore and Bandelin are reviewing the organizational chart for the golf course to better understand if tasks currently assigned to this role should be moved elsewhere within the District so that the new Director of Golf could focus on the “business” at hand instead of being pulled in too many directions.
  • Bandelin confirmed that up until the Director of Food and Beverage left the District last summer, there was someone who worked directly with the venue managers to assist them with food and beverage operations.

3. The Committee is missing the utilization data and is in a holding pattern until this data is provided to them. Ideally, they will receive the utilization around hours of operation, they will secure the makeup of the tee times and participants (play mix), and reports on the financials to better understand the expenses and revenues of both courses.

Interim Director of Finance Bobby Magee expects to have these reports and financial overviews within the next month so the Committee has time to review before the next meeting. So this topic was punted for the next 30 days.
