After months of public discussion, the Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) will discontinue its Senior Transportation Program effective August 1, 2026.
The program has long provided an important service in Incline Village and Crystal Bay, helping seniors maintain their independence by offering reliable transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, pharmacies, personal errands, and shopping. Through a partnership between IVGID Senior Programs, Washoe County, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), and the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), the program offered scheduled weekly trips to Reno and Carson City, local transportation throughout Incline Village, Crystal Bay, and Kings Beach, as well as on-demand transportation for individual appointments and errands.
Over the years, the program also expanded to include services such as airport transportation for a fee. While appreciated by many residents, the program evolved beyond its original mission of providing essential transportation assistance for seniors.
Months of Public Discussion
The future of the transportation program has been under discussion by the IVGID Board of Trustees for several months.
During the Board’s May meeting, trustees held an extensive discussion regarding whether operating a transportation service falls within the legal authority granted to General Improvement Districts under Nevada law.
Recognizing both the community’s reliance on the program and the legal questions surrounding it, the Board directed staff to begin discussions with Washoe County regarding a possible transition of the service. At that time, trustees requested additional information about transportation alternatives, senior programming, and options for maintaining service if another agency could assume responsibility. When the issue returned to the Board with guidance from legal counsel, trustees were advised that directly operating transportation services is outside the authority granted to IVGID under Nevada Revised Statutes governing General Improvement Districts. Because transportation services fall within Washoe County’s responsibilities, the County will now evaluate future transportation solutions in partnership with the Regional Transportation Commission and other agencies. In addition to the legal concerns, the existing partnership agreement between IVGID and Washoe County will not be renewed.
Looking Ahead
Although IVGID will no longer operate the Senior Transportation Program, District officials have stated they remain committed to working collaboratively with Washoe County, RTC, and other regional partners as long-term transportation options are evaluated for the Incline Village and Crystal Bay communities.

The end of IVGID’s Senior Transportation Program does not mean the need has disappeared. If anything, it highlights just how important reliable transportation is for older adults who wish to remain independent and continue living in the community they call home.
Now is the time for Washoe County to step forward.
