OPINION by Linda Kahrs and Tim Callicrate, Co-Chairs of the Committees to Recall Trustees Sara Schmitz and Matthew Dent

After an extensive 4+ month review, the Secretary of State (SoS) has confirmed the discovery of an additional 77 verified signatures for the petition to recall Matthew Dent. (See appeal)

This recent acknowledgment by the SoS supplements Washoe County’s initial report from last October, which certified 1,726 signatures. With the additional verified signatures, the total count stands at 1,803, surpassing the required 1,801 signatures needed for the recall effort to progress.

It’s worth noting that a recall election for Dent should have taken place last November, based on these figures.

Although the SoS reviewed only 483 signatures, concerns arise regarding the rejection of signatures that we believe warranted review and potential correction, particularly concerning the petition to recall Sara Schmitz.

Regrettably, the SoS has closed the case without considering a recall election at this time. Nevertheless, we have submitted another letter to the Chief Deputy Secretary of State (SoS) and eagerly await any forthcoming responses. Understanding the reasons behind the numerous errors and the reluctance to allow hundreds of signatures to be corrected, despite existing case precedents, remains a priority.

Despite our sustained efforts over recent months, we find ourselves amidst an election year. Coupled with the knowledge that neither Schmitz (who will not run again) nor Dent (who is termed out) will retain seats on the Board next year, we have decided to conclude our recall endeavors.

Redirecting our focus, energy, and enthusiasm, we are now fully committed to supporting some of the candidates vying for IVGID Trustees positions in the November election. More on this to follow soon, but we believe these candidates will play pivotal roles in realigning the IVGID Board of Trustees with the interests and accountability expectations of Incline Village residents and property owners.

The Committees to Recall Trustees Dent and Schmitz extend their gratitude to everyone who contributed to the recall effort in various capacities. While we experienced both successes and setbacks, every individual involved should take pride in their contributions.
